About

Hi! I’m Roy Tomeij, and I’m an entrepreneur, front-end developer, speaker, teacher and home automation enthousiast from the Netherlands. To reach me, send an email or tweet @roy.

Entrepreneur

I’m co-founder of AppSignal, a company that provides insights into errors and performance issues of Ruby and Elixir applications. In 2005 I co-founded 80beans (Amsterdam), one of the first Ruby consultancies in Europe.

Front-end developer

In 1996 I wrote my first front-end code. In 2007 I learned about Sass (the CSS preprocessor) and haven’t written any CSS since. My specialties are maintainable HTML and CSS/Sass; I don’t do much JavaScript.

Speaking & teaching

The best way to learn is by teaching. I have presented at dozens of events all over the world, including notable ones such as Smashing Conference, RailsConf (twice), SassConf (twice), Madison Ruby, Rocky Mountain Ruby, CSS Day, Feature of Web Apps and CSS Summit. With topics ranging from front-end architecture and advanced Sass to neuromarketing for the web, I’m a Jack of all trades. In addition, I regularly teach full-day Sass workshops around the world. Get in touch if you’d like me to speak or give a workshop at your event!

Home automation

For fun I like to play around with home automation, mostly using Z-Wave devices controlled by Domoticz. I may write about that too.
