I’ve been using MonitorControl for years without ever sharing how awesome it is with the world, so, finally: it’s awesome.
MonitorControl is an open-source macOS app that lets you control brightness, contrast, and volume for external monitors. This means I no longer need to fiddle with my OSD (On-Screen Display) to change brightness and volume when connected to my LG monitor. It’s one of those screens with a single Thunderbolt cable (or whatever other protocol over USB-C, I never know) that charges my MacBook Pro while it’s connected, without needing a separate charger. It has built-in speakers that are more than good enough for video conferencing, too.
The only downside: you need to change the volume with a tiny joystick underneath the screen, and the brightness with an on-screen menu. That’s where his nifty, free program comes in: it enables me to alter both via the native Apple keyboard buttons instead of the knob!
It has worked flawlessly over the past 3+ years (also tested with a Dell monitor with a USB soundbar), and I greatly recommend it. If you enjoy using the app, consider making a donation.
